Taking
Shape. While the most traditional cakes
are still made with round layers, more and more couples are
asking
for cakes with a square bottom or a heart shaped layer at
the top. Shapes and themed cakes are becoming the norm in
today’s weddings.
All
The Trimmings. Cake toppers are used less often to top
off a multi-layered masterpiece. Instead, couples are choosing
fresh and edible flowers, marzipan, ribbons, or an antique
topper on loan from a relative. Edible flowers and sparkling
jewels are also used to create edible artwork. If you are
choosing flowers as a topper, try to coordinate a time for
your florist and baker to speak. This ensures the same flowers
on your cake and bouquet.
Constructing
In Color. Today’s wedding cakes are all
about color and personality. Many couples are matching cake
colors to the bridesmaids’ gowns. Be careful! Some
colors may change the flavor of your icing!
Simple
Style. Simple, yet tasteful, ornamentation is trendy.
Try using rose petals, a family monogram on the cake, or
scalloped edging or bows from your dress. Sugared fruit are
also used as a simple decoration around the base of layers.
Contemporary
Craftsmanship. Smooth and sleek cake architecture
is in vogue. Today’s brides are turning away from fluffy
frostings in favor of fondant sheet icing. Swiss dots, stripes
and pearls have replaced basketweaves as popular choices.
