Making Your Catering Search Easy to Swallow

FInding A Caterer. Ask your recently married friends and family whom they used. Also, most reception sites have a preferred list of caterers.

Proposals. Always get proposals from at least three caterers. Before you call, be prepared with all the information needed such as head count and venue.

In order to get comparable proposals from each caterer, keep your request consistent when speaking to them. Don’t tell one you want a plated meal and another that you would like a buffet. Tell the caterer the amount of people invited, the location of the reception, and the time of the event. Describe what types of food you like and dislike as well as any dietary restraints guests may have. Try to give them a per person budget that you are willing to spend. This will help a caterer create the best meal they can for you. Also, ask them when you can expect to see the proposal.

Most caterers will send you two to three sample menus created with your budget in mind. Give them a follow-up call and don’t be afraid to discuss dislikes and budgetary concerns. If you give them the correct tools, you’ll be surprised how much a caterer will help you with your planning. The more comfortable you are with each other, the smoother your day will go.

I Have Three Proposals, Now What? When comparing menus be sure it’s apples to apples. Remember, consistency in speaking with caterers will make your comparison easier. Pricing for a buffet will be different from a plated meal. Both require different types of labor and equipment. When making your final decision, let your intuition and your taste buds be your guide.
