Get Me To The Church In Style

Searching for the right look takes time. Depending on your size, the color scheme of the bridal party as well as the style of the wedding, you need to start looking into your options four or five months before the big day.

To Rent Or Not… Your formalwear should be purchased or reserved about three months before the wedding. So, decisions around renting or purchasing will have to be made at least six months in advance. It has been noted that you can purchase a tuxedo for the price of renting three. Owning your tuxedo may be the option for you, especially if you know that you may need one again in the next year or so.

The Almighty Measurement. Once you have selected the perfect color and style to compliment your bride as well as the look for your groomsmen, schedule a measurement appointment for your attendants with the formalwear shop. To avoid procrastination, be sure to give your groomsmen more than enough time to have their measurements taken. Should the shop tell you four weeks, tell your groomsmen seven. This is not the time for people to take their own measurements. Formalwear tends to have a different fit than casual wear, so stress the importance that a professional tailor has to do the measurements. Add a “final fitting” to your checklist a few days before the wedding to ensure everyone is comfortable in their gear.

Don’t Forget Shoes and Accessories. For a more harmonized and coordinated look, rent the shoes. It’s a little extra, but well worth it, especially for the pictures!
To polish your look, include accessories such as cufflinks, studs, walking canes, top hats, suspenders, gloves or scarves. A wonderful and memorable idea would be to give the accessories as gifts to your groomsmen.

Too Much For You To Remember? You are in the midst of getting married and planning a wedding. The details can get a bit overwhelming. Your best man is there to help take away some of the stress. Keep him in the loop and delegate things you need him to be in charge of. Yes, we know he is busy planning that “out-of-this-world” bachelor party, but he can make a phone call or two to make sure everyone is on target with their measurements and timelines.

Helpful Hints

  • To ensure a proper fit for your shoes, bring dress socks for your final fitting.
  • Plan on matching the vest or cumberbun to the bridal party. If possible, bring a swatch of the bridesmaid’s dress with you.
  • To determine the color of the shirt or the tuxedo, you will need to know if your bride is wearing white, off-white or ivory.
  • Let your out-of-town groomsmen know they can have their measurements taken at a local formalwear shop and have the information forwarded to the shop where the suits/tuxedos are being reserved.
  • Suggest that your groomsmen bring a change of clothes to the reception, this will make it more convenient for the best man to collect the formalwear and return them to the shop.
